New year predictions: Mitesh Chouhan, Central Mailing Services

Chouhan: Work hard and smart – not just hard
Chouhan: Work hard and smart – not just hard

Never afraid to speak his mind, the Birmingham mailing house boss believes firms that moved quickly to diversify will emerge the strongest in 2021 and beyond.

If possible, what positives are you able to draw on from the experiences of 2020?
Our transition into different markets – hand fulfilment and paper wrapping. We were dynamic and constantly making changes. The pandemic forced us to realise that we needed to be more efficient.

What trend (business or technology) do you think has been accelerated because of the pandemic?
For us definitely hand collation and hand fulfilment work plus critical mailings associated around healthcare/medical sectors.

What do you think will represent the single biggest opportunity for printers in 2021 and why?
It will be another tough year as the pandemic is not yet over, there will be Brexit, and recession. I feel that those printers that have quickly diversified will do well because the work they have lost due to the pandemic will return (in some form), in addition to retaining their new area of expertise.

What are your hopes for 2021?
To get back on track to the £12m company we were just before the pandemic hit and then grow closer to £15m. We also want to bring on more paper wrap clients with our second paper wrap line, grow our poly wrapping operation due to the number of mailing houses exiting from poly, whilst keeping our personalisation, envelope enclosing and hand fulfilment areas strong.

We can't believe we're asking this question for the fourth year running: what is your one-word view on Brexit?
An expensive “mistake”.

What was the best piece of advice you have ever been given?
Work hard and smart – not just hard.

What, if anything, will you do differently in 2021?
Not a lot.

What’s your favourite Christmas cracker joke?
What is Dominic Cummings’ favourite Christmas song?
Driving Home for Christmas.

Sprouts: yes or no?
Yes please!

Are you making any new year's resolutions? If so, what?
No.
