New Year Predictions - Duarte Goncalves's take on 2011

Duarte Goncalves, managing director, DXG Media

What do you think will be the greatest opportunity for and threat to printers next year?
Over the last couple of years we have been focused on becoming more efficient and cutting costs as well as improving our buying skills. We have also worked hard at retaining half decent margins in our sales performance, despite facing up to some suicidal competitor pricing. This recession has been tough for most in manufacturing.

Moving forward DXG media has had a decent year and we are happy to state the last three months have been record months for us so looking forward we very much want this to carry on into 2011. The biggest threats to us must be bad debt, silly competitor pricing, and any further increase in material costs especially paper after around 38% this year.

What do you believe is the most under-recognised aspect in printing that is likely to become more important in 2011?

I think as printers we need to recognise that generally we provide a great value for money service, and so should not sell ourselves too cheaply. The industry needs to act on this otherwise 2011 will again have many more companies going bust.

How important do you think Northprint will be?

I think Northprint will continue to be as important this next year as it was last - to me not very important. However any event which promotes our industry is important.

What can the industry do to increase its profile next year?
We should, as an industry, work to improve our image. Very often young people do not consider our industry as its seen as dirty and "oldie-world". Most companies nowadays have modern factories and offices which house amazing equipment - litho or digital - and have a modern outlook, it is a changing world and this is still a great industry to introduce young people to.

What will you do differently next year?

The same as I do every year....promise to drink less and exercise more.
