"I have had a lot of fun during my time in the industry but the nature of business life has changed dramatically and is now too beset by regulations," said Monks. "I am also disappointed with the present negative attitude of some packaging users towards our industry, which undervalues the benefits we bring."
Monks, ranked 23 in the PrintWeek Power 100, has been chief executive for the past 14 years and became head of Nampak's European operations after it merged with MY's parent company Malbak in 2002.
He will step down in December, but plans to stay involved in the industry.
"I hope to continue to contribute to the industry through participation with trade associations or in a role with a smaller business," he said Monks.
Monks is known for his outspoken views on the industry. Last year he said that the packaging industry was a "dam ready to burst" and said that suppliers were being squeezed by retailers (PrintWeek, 28 February 2003).
His career has spanned 48 years beginning as a trainee at Metal Box and has had roles at companies including Rexam, Mardon International and Norton Opex.
