Monotype subsidiary adds new fonts for OUP China

China Type Design, the Hong Kong-based subsidiary of Monotype Imaging Holdings, has licensed two Chinese fonts customised for the Oxford University Press (OUP) China.

OUP China, the Hong Kong-based subsidiary of the Oxford University Press, has used the fonts, which together comprise around 35,000 characters, in the Simplified Chinese version of the Oxford Advanced Learner's English-Chinese Dictionary, Seventh Edition.

OUP China used the DictSungHKS Light font, based on China Type’s MSungHKS Light font, and the MHeiHKS Bold font, which was applied to the special headings and labels.

More than 3,000 characters were added to the DictSungHKS-Light font to achieve full coverage of the Hong Kong supplementary character set. Special characters were also added to meet the customised requirements for dictionary usage.

Both fonts are based on the OpenType font format and conform to the Unicode Standard of multilingual digital information exchange. The typefaces also support the Big5 Chinese character encoding system.

The Oxford Advanced Learner's English-Chinese Dictionary, Seventh Edition, is due to be launched in mainland China in the second quarter of 2009.
