Within weeks of gaining the accreditations, the £3m-turnover company has won a large job through a trade customer for a national supermarket.
Director Julian Marsh said that being able to print the FSC logo was a pre-requisite for this customer.
"As trade printers, we have a large number of trade customers whose clients were asking about environmental accreditations," he said.
"We ended up getting the accreditations to ensure customers they will be able to continue using us if they needed Chain-of-Custody products."
Marsh said that although becoming FSC accredited was "quite fiddly and paperwork intensive", the 30-staffed company will have recovered the cost of gaining accreditation within a few months.
"We use a good MIS which has made the accounting procedure a lot easier. The whole thing is a bit academic as during January we only bought FSC- or PEFC-approved material."
The company is also ISO 9001:2000 accredited and is working towards ISO 14001. It has recently invested in a CTP front-end upgrade to improve productivity and efficiency.
Marsh said: "This is to help us cope with the increased number of files being received as a result of our online activity, which is generating up to 100 small orders a day."
The company is also moving from a five-day working week to a full continental shift pattern over the coming weeks in its pressroom.
"We are offering our trade customers free use of our web-to-print editable template system and looking to expand in that area," he said.
Prometheus Press is a trade-only litho printer based in Kent and Tradecolour.com is an online facility that sells to the trade.
