MHI launches environmental initiative

Bristol-based mailing house Mail Handling International (MHI) has implemented a monthly initiative that encourages staff to cycle or walk to work called ‘two-wheel Tuesday’.

The scheme kicked off on 10 February, when the majority of the company’s 70 staff left their cars at home and either cycled or walked to work.

Chief executive Paul Brown said: “Nearly all the staff came to work on a bike or by foot.  They really enjoyed it and loved the incentive of a doughnut waiting for them at the end. It’s a bit of fun with a serious message."

Bristol is the first UK city to be named a European Green Capital, an EU initiative launched in 2008 to encourage local authorities to improve urban environments.

‘Two-wheel Tuesday’ has been introduced as part of a wider movement that is taking place across the city and the wider South West in 2015, in which businesses are being encouraged to be more environmentally friendly.

Staff will be encouraged to cycle or walk to work on the first Tuesday of every month. According to Brown, it was the first time many of the staff had commuted to work by bike.

“It made some of the staff realise that cycling to work is a viable option. These things are habit-forming and it would be great if we thought about cycling in to work more often,” he said.

The company has taken additional steps to become more environmentally friendly.  It has invested in LED lighting and the factory has been fitted with solar panels. Brown said: “On a normal sunny day the digital print department runs on 100% solar power.”
