Mediatech, which was founded in January this year, took over the factory and equipment of pharmaceutical data company Dendrite’s direct mail operation in Rugby.
Sales director Dave Wright said: “We inherited quite a lot of kit from Dendrite, but we needed to upgrade the inserting and Buhrs are the industry standard.”
The firm bought two high-speed, servo-driven BB600s and two BB300 envelope inserting systems, representing about one-third of its £1.5m start-up investment.
Buhrs envelope inserting manager Chris Rees said: “The BB600s are fast machines for DL and C5 applications, while the BB300s are all-purpose machines for all sizes from C6 to B4. It gives them the capacity to do long runs of DL and C5 and the capacity to enclose into any other size using the BB300s.”
The additional capacity has lead the company to move rapidly from a single day shift to a double day shift, and then to seven-day production. The firm’s monthly turnover, meanwhile, has grown by over 300%, from £80,000 in January to £270,000 in March.
Wright said: “We knew it would be a steep curve, but it’s been staggering. We’ve had to invest a lot in order to get that front-end growth though.”
Next on the company’s shopping list is a polywrapper, which will also come from Buhrs.
“They’re awaiting delivery of a polywrapper, we’ve just got to sort out where it’s coming from. The important thing is that they’ve got plenty of room to expand, which is not usually the case with new start-ups,” said Rees.
