The blaze took hold in the early hours of Easter Monday, and at its peak involved 15 fire engines, two hydraulic platforms and more than 100 firefighters, who battled to contain the fire.
It created a plume of smoke that could be seen for miles, and nearby residents were warned to keep their doors and windows closed.
Tradpak specialises in plastic packaging waste recycling, including the production of granulated high-density polyethylene and shredded polypropylene that can be made into new plastic products. It also supplies and reconditions intermediate bulk containers (IBCs).
Two nearby industrial units were also affected, including packaging firm Hazel Products, which supplies printers’ cartons and palletwrap among a wide range of products.
A statement on the firm’s website said: “A fire has destroyed part of the Hazel Products facilities in Leeds, however a Disaster Recovery Plan has been implemented and supplies should not be affected.”
Other local businesses praised the work of the fire service in containing the massive blaze.
David Maudson, director at cutting formes specialist Die-Set Formes, told PrintWeek: “The fire is at the back of us and it’s still smoking away this morning. When I first saw it I thought my place had gone up in flames as well. The fire brigade did an amazing job.”
Tradpak was unavailable for comment at the time of writing. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
