Major contracts pulled from Cooper Clegg

Cooper Clegg has lost up to three major contracts as efforts to find a buyer for the business continue.

Bauer has pulled all of its work from the Tewkesbury-based magazine printer, while Southernprint has taken on Seven Publishing's Sainsbury's Magazine and Delicious, and PrintWeek understands that Conde Nast has moved two titles to St Ives.

Wyndeham, Southernprint and St Ives have taken on the Bauer work from Cooper Clegg with immediate effect ahead of the planned relocation of the contracts in April.

Jeremy Bull, group production manager at Bauer, said: "I made the decision to terminate with Cooper Clegg on Monday. It's just to make sure we've got continuity of manufacturing and we can secure capacity in the UK."

The publications will now be printed as per the tender announcement made in December last year with the exception of FHM, which will be printed on an interim contract at Southernprint before its planned transfer to Bauer's in-house printing site in Germany in April.

In addition, Southernprint has been awarded the contract to print Seven Publishing's Sainsbury's Magazine and Delicious.

Charles Jarrold, managing director of Southernprint, told PrintWeek: "We are happy to confirm that the Sainsbury's Magazine and Delicious work is now with us. This acquisition puts us off on a good footing for a tough 2009.

"That said, we are obviously aware that this is not good news for Cooper Clegg and we are sensitive to this issue."

The contract losses will come as a blow to administrator Peter Kubik who has said he was confident a buyer would be found for the business, which went into administration in December last year. It is currently unclear what impact the contract losses will have.

Kubik, Seven Publishing, St Ives and Conde Nast declined to comment.
