LCC and Inca hail success of knowledge transfer scheme

The London College of Communication (LCC) and Inca Digital Printing have been praised for their outstanding achievement after collaborating on a two-year Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP).

The university has been working with Inca to develop colour management techniques for its large-format colour inkjet printers. The project, fronted by LCC student Johanna Kleinmann, helped Inca move from four-colour CMYK to a six-colour process.

KTP schemes are collaborations between companies and educational institutions. The projects provide revenue for educational institutions while improving business operations.

The objective of the Inca project was to improve the ink selection on the company's new six-colour and eight-colour presses. The team achieved an A grade, as assessed by Momenta, the government agency that administers KTP.

Professor Lindsay MacDonald, of the School of Printing & Publishing at LCC, told PrintWeek: "Inca wanted to create two new ink channels to give them a competitive advantage. KTP schemes were an ideal route for them.

"The projects involve a bright graduate, in this case Johanna, working with a business for two years with support from their university.

"This was a project in which everyone benefited greatly, and we at the university were privileged to be involved in world-class engineering by a British company being applied to exciting new print media applications."

Kleinmann said: "As well as promoting technical advancement, the programme also provided a unique training opportunity.

"The KTP supported extensive personal development in ensuring the success of the project. Through the scheme I was able to complete a part-time MSc and acquired strong skills in colour science.

"I also had great working experience in a competitive company made up of brilliant people."

Will Eve, director of technology at Inca, added: "Having access to the university's expertise to improve our understanding of colour was one of the reasons for undertaking a KTP and it has worked very well.

"The combination of fresh, eager talent on-site, together with experienced top-level supervision from the university, is really effective."
