Killer app: Studio One teaches lesson for school hoarding

Northamptonshire County Council has enlisted the help of local wide-format printer Studio One to supply hoarding boards to dress the perimeter fence surrounding the town’s old post office site.

The fence was required for security and safety while the building is refurbished into the new Northampton International Academy School. The imagery on the boards, which are due to stay up until the project is completed later this year, promotes the Academy and contains contact details.

What did the job entail?

Studio One received the graphics from an architect firm working on behalf of the council and then tweaked the artwork to fit the fencing. The site required 38 panels, each measuring 1.22x2.44m with a repeating pattern.

The project required a white matt product with strong ink adhesion properties that would be resilient when exposed to the elements. Following a recommendation from Leeds-based supplier PPB, Studio One opted to use the aluminium composite material proBond Platinum White RAL 9016 in sheet sizes to match the panels and 3mm thickness with a 0.18mm skin.

Studio One was tasked with turning around the project in three to four working days, from site survey to installation. Around six of the firm’s staff worked on the job, including a team of two who installed the graphics over a two-day period.

How was it produced?

Studio One printed directly onto the panels using its EFI Vutek GS3250 Pro wide-format UV printer. A few of the panels had to be cut to size, which was completed using a Kongsberg XP44 cutting table, and the firm matt laminated the face of the board using a Hot Press 64in laminator to ensure maximum impact and durability.

What challenges were overcome?

Studio One commercial director Danny Golden said: “Before you put a hoarding wall up you’ve got to site survey it and check the panels for any differences in elevation. Adjustments to the artwork then have to be made accordingly so that if the panels are staggered at all when they are fitted, the text still runs over them and reads correctly.”

What was the feedback?

“The graphics are exceptionally vibrant, which helps them to stand out, and the council were very impressed with both the quality of the print and the speed in which we delivered the job,” said Golden.
