Killer app: Monster bunch employ the force for Hollywood hit

Birmingham wide-format printer Hollywood Monster created a striking wall graphic for a local branch of cinema chain Cineworld to help launch the biggest film of the past few months – Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

What did the job entail?

The firm was tasked by the cinema operator’s Broad Street, Birmingham branch – a regular client – to produce the two-part graphic, which was required to be displayed across two adjacent interior walls.

Hollywood Monster printed and finished the graphic and then installed it at the cinema.

The printing took around seven hours, due to the slow print speed needed to reach the high levels of quality required, and six people then installed the graphic overnight while the cinema was closed to the public.

The graphic remained in place for around six weeks before Hollywood Monster replaced it with a similar wall graphic for another upcoming blockbuster, Deadpool.

How was it produced?

After receiving the artwork from the agency working with the film’s production company, Hollywood Monster printed 24 separate 4.6x1.3m tiles onto CMYUK’s Utack removable textile, using its EFI Vutek H2000 Pro printer. The tiles were then cut to size using a Zünd G3 digital cutter.

Hollywood Monster sales director Simon McKenzie said: “Utack media was perfect for this installation, being easy to install as it sticks directly to the wall with no frame needed. It is also forgiving on some of the walls that we work with that have imperfections on them.”

What challenges were overcome?

The biggest challenge was working to a very tight deadline, the business only having a small window of less than 24 hours to print and finish the graphic and complete the installation. “Once the artwork arrived we started printing it at lunchtime and installed it that night, in order to get it up before the film premiered,” said McKenzie.

What was the feedback?

“Cineworld were delighted that we managed to get it finished on time and really pleased with our service, which is the reason why we get repeat work with them every month,” said McKenzie.
