Killer app: Green minds' Olympic effort

Being lean and green isn't just a badge of honour, according to Print Revolution director Paul Bamford, it also wins work, as illustrated by the firm's recent contract to print a book based on environmental issues surrounding the build of the Olympic Stadium.

What was the project? To print 500 copies of the 12pp A4 brochure, which included producing very fine tints throughout. "The book included images of what the Olympic constructions will be like, along with details of the environmental issues to do with the site. Lots of aspects of the build are to do with sustainability," says Bamford. The company also provided environmental information and details of carbon savings made during the production process.

How was the project produced? In line with the green theme, the Nottingham-based printer used a waterless Presstek 52 DI powered by energy from a green supplier, which generates electricity from a sustainable source, to print the project on Arjowiggins carbon-balanced 150gsm Cocoon Gloss paper. "The product has gone through what is basically a digital run length but with the quality of normal litho print," says Bamford.

What challenges were overcome?
According to Bamford, being able to illustrate key environmental information and show carbon savings made during the production of the project was one of the key challenges, especially as it had to be turned around in three days.

What was the feedback?
Impressive, according to Jack Berridge, publisher at Quarry Management, which project managed the publication. "We wanted the brochure produced to a high environmental standard by a printer with strong green credentials. Print Revolution is the only firm I know of that employs carbon footprinting. The company turned the product around very quickly to a high print standard, and provided a great customer service," he says.
