Hewlett-Packard has unveiled a UV-resistant pigment-based ink set for its DesignJet 5000 large-format press range.
The firm said the HP 83 UV ink system was "revolutionary". It is interchangeable with the HP 81 dye-based system, allowing users to swap between inks on a single printer.
The system is expected to be available in March with an estimated US list price of 7,200 ($10,495) for the 42in model.
In North America, it will ship directly with either HP 83 UV inks or the HP 81 inks. Separate UV or dye-based ink upgrade kits will be available. Outside North America, all printers will ship with HP 81 inks and UV ink upgrade kits.
The UV Printing System uses six-colour inks, including light cyan and light magenta. The firm claimed it would offer durable images with an outdoor limited warranty of three years under the 3M matched component system and an expected indoor fade resistance of up to 200 years.
The system uses HPs Jetexpress technology and prints at up to 50m2 per hour.
HPs Durable Image Gloss UV and Colorlucent Backlit UV, which is now available in 60in format, can be used for printing. Other suitable media include HP Studio Canvas and
3M Changeable Opaque Imaging Media.
The system is backed by a one-year limited warranty with free on-site next business day service.
