The Leeds-based direct marketing agency invested in an HP Indigo 12000 in March. The B2 press joined a 7500 and 7600 in its pressroom, and, according to managing director Chris Bottomley, the company is already reaping the rewards from the boost in production firepower.
“It’s gone really well actually, volumes are going [up] throughout all the machines as well, we are working 24 hours a day, five days a week on that,” he said.
“The 12000 was brought in because of the high volumes coming throughout the business, hence the reason that one of the presses hit a record, it got to the point we just needed more firepower to satisfy demand.”
Last week, Gecko was notified by HP that in January 2017 it broke the EMEA record for monthly Indigo impressions on its 7600, clocking more than 6.5 million, which was 300,000 more than the previous record held by Spanish printer Rotaclick.
Bottomley said that while he wasn’t aware of the record until HP informed him, he wasn’t entirely surprised to have been lauded for output volumes. He said the award was testament to how much work the 60-staff company has been taking on.
“We normally do around 10 million to 12 million clicks a month, which is quite a massive volume really,” he added.
“What has been a shock to a lot of people is that we can do digital runs of 100,000, fully personalised. Several years ago that was not even heard of.”
Running its own web-to-print solution, Gecko mainly handles longer-run work for clients initiating personalised and targeted direct mail campaigns.
Launched last year at Drupa, the four-colour HP Indigo 12000 will eventually replace the 10000 in HP's Indigo line-up. It can print at speeds of up to 4,600sph at a resolution of 2,438dpi, and takes sheet sizes of up to 750x530mm.
£10.5m-turnover Gecko operates from three units totalling 4,200sqm and has been using Indigo products since the turn of the decade. It also runs two Konica Minolta Bizhub Press 1250 digital presses, two Duplo stitching lines and two Neopost enclosing lines.
