Gardners spends 2.4m on new plant and kit

Digital print firm Gardners is ploughing 2.4m into a new facility and additional equipment as it aims to bolster its turnover to 15m.

The Cardiff-based firm is to move from its current site to a new 6,000 sqm factory in Pentwyn. The purpose-built facility will allow the firm to install extra kit and help double its capacity. The firm currently has a turnover of nearly £9m and said it is on target to increase that to £15m in the next two and a half years.

Financial director Dan Hird said: “The site means that we can start from a blank sheet of paper. We are currently midway through construction and completion is likely to be by May.”

Gardners secured a £300,000 loan from Finance Wales and a grant from the Welsh Assembly, as well as funding from the Bank of Scotland.

The company predominantly uses digital equipment to produce its work in the outdoor media and point-of-sale sectors.

According to Gardners founder and managing director Richard Gardner, the move will consolidate its three sites and allow the firm to bring in additional equipment. The move will also create an extra 41 jobs.

Gardners’ turnover has nearly doubled in the past three years, to £8.6m, and it has a workforce of 98.
The firm’s plant list includes an eight-colour Agfa Dotrix press. It was the first firm in the world to install the machine for point-of-sale and outdoor display print.

Its clients include Scottish & Newcastle, JC Decaux and Tesco.
