Final Celloglas sites sold to Best Cover UV

The ongoing saga of the former Celloglas facilities has come to an end with the final two sites being sold by the administrator.

Leeds-based coatings expert Best Cover UV has bought the Manchester and Bristol facilities from MCR, saving 28 jobs.

It brings an end to more than a month of uncertainty for the employees, after the company was initially put into administration on 5 January.

Five of Celloglas's sites, at Reading, Birmingham, Leicester and two in Leeds, were sold back to the previous directors under new company Newcelloco – which is trading as Celloglas.

Sites at Acton, Birmingham, Poole and Gloucester were closed and the assets sold to secondhand kit distributors. More than 100 jobs were made redundant over the course of January.

The investment in the Manchester and Bristol facilities means that Best Cover, which already has sites in Leeds and London, will now expand its coatings remit.

Managing director Darren Crake said: "We want to become a market leader at what we do. It was always in our business plan to increase to four or five sites.

"This investment allows us to concentrate on the kind of work that we already do but using different technologies."

He added: "It will give us a bigger client base and allow us to change some people's perception of us. A lot of people think we are only interested in the large volume stuff but that is definitely not true."

As well as being able to add lamination to its portfolio, the company will also be able to offer silk screen spot UV in-house – which was previously contracted out.

Crake added that he would be keeping all of the current staff on board, as well as looking to make investments at both sites, which may lead to additional staff being employed.

He also said he was currently looking for a new production manager at the Manchester site.
