Caledonian gets extension OK

Caledonian Offset has won planning permission for a 750 square meter extension, as speculation grows that it is set to place the worlds first order for Gosss Flexible Printing System (FPS).

Industry sources believe that the Edinburgh-based paper is planning to install the 3.7m-high compact press at its Caledonian Offset plant.
It would replace an existing Goss Colorliner press, which was installed at the Newhaven Road site in 1990.

The Scotsman Publications, which belongs to Telegraph Group owners the Barclay brothers, announced a 22m press project earlier this year with an order for a major Ferag mailroom upgrade.

Edinburgh City Council granted permission for the scheme, which will house a paper store at The Scotsman's print plant, on 2 August, after the application was submitted on 3 May.

No further details of the project were available, and both Caledonian Offset and The Scotsman Publications were unavailable for comment.
Goss launched its FPS, which is based on Colorliner technology but packs a full four-colour tower into a sliding 3.7m-high unit, it Drupa last year.

Newspaper sources says that an announcement of the deal was expected at IfraExpo 2005 in Leipzig last month.

Goss declined to confirm or deny the speculation.
