With its Walk on the Wild Side theme, the competition for the 2013 calendar had 50,000 entries and Countryfile expects sales of the finished article to beat the £1.2m raised by the 2012 calendar.
What did the job entail?
APS Group and Art Of Design were tasked with reproducing, printing and binding the photographs selected by the Countryfile judges, including comedian Jo Brand and presenter Chris Packham, as the finalists of its 2012 competition to find Britain’s best amateur photographers.
How was it produced?
The pages were printed using Roland six- and 10-colour B1 waterless presses on Arjowiggins Graphic’s Satimat Silk 350gsm and 170gsm stock. All sections were printed four-colour with varnish coating and the back and front covers were gloss laminated on one side. The sections were then saddle stitched to form the calendar and drilled to create a hole for hanging.
What challenges were overcome?
Trials were undertaken prior to printing to decide which process and materials would give the best result when trying to achieve a finish as close as possible to the original winning photographs.
What was the feedback?
Countryfile series producer Teresa Bogan said: "This is the 12th Countryfile calendar and the most successful so far. We couldn’t be more delighted because it will go a long way to helping children right across the country. The calendar is made up of the winners of our annual photo competition, so it’s a brilliant opportunity for amateur photographers."
