Q&A: Andrew Barnes, managing director, Multiflow Print

“Gentleman in print” Andrew Barnes has been in the industry for 28 years, and his career at Bicester’s Multiflow Print began in 1989 as production manager. After inexplicably omitting this bastion of the printiverse on Twitter (@Printesque) from our recent Twit Awards, we are delighted to provide him with an opportunity to elucidate his views in more than 140 characters.

Why did you get into printing? 

At school I had two ambitions: becoming a vet or becoming a graphic designer. I joined Southern Continuous Forms (SCF) in its graphics department to cut my teeth in platemaking, planning and typesetting

What would be your dream job? 

Becoming a vet

Who would play you in a movie about your life? 

John Malkovich, he’s contemplative with a touch of madness about him. Nothing like me, of course

What is your dream bit of kit? 

Roland TD-30KV drum kit

What would you most like to print? 

The first Premier League match day programme for Brighton & Hove Albion FC

What is your favourite film? 

Any Coen Brothers film

Favourite TV programme? 

Any Nordic Noir

Who or what do you hate the most? 

Incompetence

Who do you admire most in the industry? 

Phil Dooley former managing director at SCF, for giving me the opportunity to work in print

What is your favourite saying? 

The job’s not done until the money is in the bank!

What is your favourite album? 

Low by David Bowie. Currently, I’m listening to Antiphon by Midlake

What is your greatest luxury in life? 

Being healthy

What is the strangest job you’ve ever done? 

Collecting blood samples from six chickens in a shed of thousands. Took me an hour!

Who or what makes you laugh? 

My work colleagues are always making me laugh and remembering that old print classic ‘What’s a moiré’ and bursting into song

What piece of kit would you like to see invented? 

A clean, up-to-date database

What’s your worst fashion disaster? 

Don’t remind me of those 1980s ‘Young Romantic’ years

Which superpower would you like to have? 

Hindsight

Who would be your favourite party guests? 

David Bowie, John Malkovich, Sienna Miller, Mark Cavendish, Lord Owen and Simon Biltcliffe

What is the worst kind of print? 

Non-profitable

What was the best business deal that you’ve pulled off? 

Downsizing to a B3 house
