Q&A: Terry Scanlon Managing director, West Port Print & Design

How apt that Terry’s work and family are located in St Andrews, the home of golf. Although his first love of sport was football and he played until he was 35, golf subsequently became his game and he still plays off an impressive handicap of six. Having started work in the industry in 1965, he’s on his way to notching up 50 years in print.

Why did you get into printing? 

At 15, I was following my father into his potato business having worked on every process involved with spuds. He died suddenly aged 42 and left mum with six kids. My older brother and I left school straightaway and got jobs to help out with the youngsters. Mike became a joiner, I became a printer

A golf pro on the tour

Who would play you in a movie about your life? 

Steve McQueen – when I first met my wife she said I looked like him

What is your dream bit of kit? 

The new driver from Taylormade

What would you most like to print? 

Playboy magazine

Gladiator

Anything on Sky Sports

Who or what do you hate the most? 

I hate the so-called customer service that companies inflict on us, you have to press so many buttons before you can speak to a human being

‘You know what I don’t understand? Chinese writing’

What is your greatest luxury in life? 

Holidays in the Algarve

What is the strangest job you’ve ever done? 

I took a second job bottling milk at 5.30am to help save up for our first house

Who would you like to be stuck on a desert island with? 

Obviously my darling wife, and Beyoncé could come along to make
us tea

What is your greatest ambition? 

To get down to scratch handicap

Who or what makes you laugh? 

My wife usually and my beautiful grandchildren

What piece of kit would you like to see invented? 

The kind that made the same impact as the first Canon CLC1 colour copier

Where would you like to be right now? 

In Portugal

What was your childhood obsession? 

To become a professional footballer

What’s your worst fashion disaster? 

It would have to be 13in flares with 3in turn-ups. I tried to play golf in them

Which superpower would you like to have? 

To be able to fly

What is the worst kind of print? 

The kind that nobody pays for!

What was the best business deal that you’ve pulled off? 

Leaving a steady job in the university printing department and starting my own business
