The guillotine arrived at the Cardiff plant this month to replace two older guillotines.
The company will keep its first ever 1985 Polar guillotine, which has been with the company since its beginning, as a back up for times of need.
The 1996 Polar will move down to Western Print Finishing, Westdale’s Bristol-based soft binding arm.
Westdale signed for the machine at its launch at Drupa as managing director Alan Padbury was impressed with its capability to automatically send paper waste to a recycling chamber.
He had seen an operator using a machine with a similar function on previous trips to Europe and said: "I was pretty conscious that the operator was getting through a lot of work with minimal effort.
"When I watched my own team I realised they were working quite hard, so I bought the Polar in the interest of efficiency. We move a lot of the work onto other finishing equipment and if you’re not careful a guillotine can become a bottleneck."
He added that its ability to keep the factory tidy was another important factor in taking the decision to buy the guillotine and would guide other investments.
The 35-strong East Moors Bindery team is part of Westdale Printing Group, which became the first UK customers to sign for KBA’s Rapida 106 and Goss’ Purlux 1200 saddlestitcher during its Drupa investment drive.
Westdale Printing Group were highly commended at this year's PrintWeek awards category for Consumer Magazine Printer of the Year.
