US paper company aims to highlight ethical issues

A US paper manufacturer is attempting to get consumers to embrace ethically sourced paper in the same way they would choose food or clothes with regard to their provenance.

Ohio-based company NewPage Corporation has launched the PaperTellsAStory.com website to highlight the fact that some imported paper is sourced from producers that have questionable environmental and labour practices, as well as logistics issues.

The site highlights bad practice in paper production, including the case of the Mandiangin community in Sumatra, whose land was forcefully logged, questions over labour in China and non-sustainably sourced wood chips from Russia.

Rick Willett, president and chief operating officer for NewPage, said: Giving the same importance to paper as we do to the food we eat or the clothes we buy, the goal of the ‘Story’ campaign is to get people thinking about the journey of a single sheet of paper, where the journey begins and the sustainability and environmental practices of its manufacturer.
