Q&A: Michael Mortimer, account executive, RR Donnelley

Michael is a whippersnapper at 25 years old, yet despite that he’s close to notching up a decade in print. He’s also been on the road, moving from Bath to London via Devon to further his career. He started off at Avon Printing Services in Melksham and then moved on to Kingfisher Print in Totnes before taking the opportunity to come to the capital with RR Donnelley.

Why did you get into printing? 

I started working at my dad’s B3 print company for a couple of weeks until I worked out what I wanted to do. Nine years later I’m still in print...

What would be your dream job?

To be managing director of a successful print firm – preferably B2

Who would play you in a movie about your life?

Idris Elba

What is your dream bit of kit?

Heidelberg Speedmaster XL 75 (when used to its full potential)

What is your favourite film?

The Wolf of Wall Street is my favourite over the last couple of years but of all time it is probably The Business

What is your favourite TV show?

The Office never gets old (has to be the UK version though!)

Who or what do you hate the most?

People with very little print knowledge who clog up the forums and timelines with incorrect or irrelevant information that in my opinion does more harm than good to the
industry

Who do you admire most in print? 

Alex Burgess, production manager at Kingfisher Print. He’s not everyone’s cup of tea but he means well

What is your favourite album?

My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy by Kanye West – the man’s a genius

What is the strangest job you’ve had?

I once worked in a call centre trying to sell people double glazing, I hated every minute and left after a month

What is your greatest ambition?

To retire by 40 with a large property empire funding a ridiculously lavish lifestyle...

What’s your greatest fear?

Turning into someone that I dislike

Most embarrassing moment?

Too many to mention

Where would you like to be now?

With all of my family and friends on a beach somewhere

What’s your worst fashion disaster?

I’ve had a few in my time but I recently bought a very expensive (and what I thought was lovely) suit, only to be told I look like a clown by the other half when I got home

Which superpower would you like?

To be able to teleport would be useful as my family are very spread out across the world

Who would be your favourite party guests?

Ricky Gervais, Kanye West, Terry Hall (of The Specials) and Eric Djemba-Djemba

What is the worst kind of print?

Anything that nobody makes money from and is instantly binned anyway

How would you like to be remembered?

Simply as the man who put a smile on the face of everyone he met...
