Q&A: Nigel Thorpe Sales executive, Colourprint Norwich

Nigel started in the industry aged just 16 and is still in it 41 years later. And he has plans to be around for a bit longer still. He used to be something of a football player and is now a season ticket holder at the mighty (it says here) Norwich City. He’s married to Tina, with one grown-up son, Leon.

Why did you get into printing?  

I was 16 and needed a job. A local printer wanted an apprentice and the rest is history...

What would be your dream job?   

Restaurant critic

Who would play you in a movie about your life?    

Robbie Coltrane

What is your dream bit of kit?  

A Norwich City kit

What is your favourite film? 

It’s a Wonderful Life

Who or what do you hate the most? 

Hate is a negative emotion, I don’t waste my time with it

Who do you admire most in print? 

Phillip Colchester of CPG. I worked for him on and off for a total of 25 years, I have total respect

What is your favourite saying?  

‘You want it when? We will try our best’

What is your greatest luxury in life?  

Vodka

What is the strangest job you’ve had?   

Collecting eggs from reluctant turkeys

Who would you like to be stuck on a desert island with?  

Bear Grylls would be handy

What is your greatest ambition?  

To reach retirement still in the print industry

What piece of kit would you like to see invented?  

A teleportation machine to help get around to customers quicker

Sitting on Cromer Pier with a beer

What’s your worst fashion disaster?    

In the 1980s I had a mullet... I actually liked it

Don’t tell anyone, I already have one

Who would be your favourite party guests?    

Kate Bush. No one else required

Where would you go if you could time-travel?   

To 1959 and Norwich City’s FA Cup run, so I could go with my father who died when I was six

What is the worst kind of print?  

Anything that was won solely on price

What was the best business deal that you’ve pulled off?  

Brochures for the promotion of Chelsea Village. Interesting man Ken Bates

How would you like to be remembered?   

An honest bloke who did his best

What was your childhood obsession?  

Lego and Batman, which I now believe you can get together
