Innovation and an openness to new ideas are the hallmarks of this small East Sussex printer, which has stormed into the PrintWeek Awards by picking up the prize for the best small, but perfectly formed, company at its first attempt. Its willingness to change has enabled Berforts to grow through the recent turbulent times, retaining its high-quality litho heritage, while expanding into the digital print market to become a leading exponent of print-on-demand. Its investments in cutting-edge digital equipment have made it one of the main producers of lightweight, thin paper books and journals and it sees book production, in particular on-demand, as a real growth area. Not content with its success in the UK market, Berforts, which is based "with its back to the sea" in Hastings, has set its sights on Europe, where it has a successful and expanding relationship with several Dutch and Belgian customers.
