It's a fantastic result for Beacon Press, who go home with the win in this category, as well as the commendation it picked up in the brochure category. The Uckfield-based printer - a past winner of this award - continued to impress the judges with its "great repro, excellent use of different techniques and consistently good finishing". Beacon's repro skills were there for all to see in its work on the Shaftesbury Annual Report 09, carrying out colour conversions from RGB to CMYK, while keeping the gamut as large as possible, before producing book proofs on the same six-colour Heidelberg CD102 that the final printing would be carried out on. Final colour corrections were performed prior to imaging the plates for the production run using custom profiles, developed by Beacon. According to the judges, it was "obvious that they had worked well with the designer and that good communication had paid off".

Congratulations to Granite on its second commendation this year, which is also its second in this category in two years. Essex-based Granite demonstrated stand-out print and colour across all of its submissions, showing "that little bit extra" in terms of both "consistency and attention to detail". For the Victoria & Albert Museum's report and accounts, Granite found the cover image needed work to be brought up to suitable quality. It was able to compensate by increasing the resolution and through further expert retouching.
