However, this year, Alan takes the title thanks to the fact that, since he joined Newsprinters (Knowsley) three-years ago, with no formal print qualifications, he has demonstrated a thirst for knowledge and determination to progress. The latter was proven when he was chosen as lead printer on the first print run of the Financial Times, an opportunity he grasped, like all others, with both hands. Respected for his attention to detail and eagerness to learn as much as possible, his rapid progress has impressed both his tutors and his colleagues.
Commended – James Hocking, Amcor Flexibles Cumbria
James has been put up for this award because his colleagues and tutors have been so impressed with his transformation from a "shy young man" into a "leader brimming with confidence". Producing work of an incredibly high standard, James has engaged fully with the print process and has a tenacity to learn all he can about the industry.
Commended – Blaine Madgwick, Stephens & George Print Group
Blaine quickly showed an affinity with both the pressroom and the finishing department to such an extent that managers from both areas fought to keep hold of him – with the pressroom winning the battle. In exams during his second year, he scored a remarkable 100% in both his theory and practical examinations, giving Stephens & George the confidence to put him in charge of an eight-colour XL 105 when the regular operator was unavailable.
