Print supplier introduces 3D printing stock for HP Indigo users

HP Indigo press users will soon be able to print 3D-effect images without the need for interlacing software, following the introduction of a new substrate to the UK market.

Print and wide-format supplier Leed Consultancy has become the UK distributor for a 3D material on behalf of MXG Digital in the US.

The material is a special substrate for 3D printing that could previously only be used with offset presses. The recyclable, polypropylene stock can be used on HP Indigo sheetfed presses on models 5000 upwards that have a thick stock upgrade fitted to create images with an illusion of depth.

Alan Steenson, owner of Leed Consultancy, said the UK launch of the substrate would open up a raft of 3D markets for HP Indigo users, including those in the retail, cosmetic, entertainment and food sectors.

The business has also identified applications such as point-of-sale, brochures, posters, inserts and direct mail as ideal uses for the print process.

According to the company, the best results are achieved by using a light coloured background and bold colours on the main image to give a sharper contrast.

Final testing is taking place in the UK with pricing to be confirmed in the coming weeks.
