Killer app: MirriNor on top of the Wold

Award-winning brewer Wold Top Brewery worked with Oriel and Concept Packaging to create apromotional pack using Smurfit Kappa and Celloglas' revolutionary MirriNor microflute.

What did the job entail?
Wold Top Brewery wanted to produce a high-end gift pack using MirriNor after being involved in an initial project for the substrate’s launch. The metallic substrate was chosen for all aspects of the four-bottle pack due to it being strong yet lightweight.

How was it produced?
Smurfit Kappa’s 900micron Norboard is laminated with Mirri foil on either side at Celloglas’ Theale facility to produce the pressurised 770micron reflective substrate.

Hull printer Oriel used Color-Logic software to create a blueprint for its Speedmaster CD 102. White inks were first laid down to determine which areas would be opaque once it was overprinted in CMYK. The parts not covered with white remained translucent and the colours took on the MirriNor’s reflective appearance.

The flatpack was brought back to Celloglas’ Leeds factory where the windows and interlocking sections were die-cut on a B1 Sanwa.

What challenges were overcome?
Rochester’s Concept Packaging had to create a design to include a folding internal section to keep the bottles facing forward.

What was the feedback?
Wold Top Brewery owner Gill Mellor said: "We were really excited about the metallic effects that could be created using MirriNor, but then we were blown away by the excellent result on the finished box. The Color-Logic process enabled us to incorporate an intricate design with a high-quality gold effect."
