WHAT Envelopes to mail DVDs from online movie rental firm Lovefilm’s range of more than 65,000 titles. Along with standard Lovefilm-branded sleeves, the envelopes are also used to market third-party products. Each unit can be resealed and functions as the return envelope.

HOW The envelopes are litho-printed on Drent Goebel and Muller Martini web offset presses on 150gsm silk stock in runs of seven million.
It takes three to four weeks to produce one run. Special edition sponsored envelopes can be also be produced in short runs of 200,000 to 400,000 units. Addresses are applied using either inkjet addressing devices or peelable labels. The envelopes are designed by Lovefilm’s design team and manufactured on a 12-week cycle. They come in two sections that are glued together to form the DVD pocket. The customer’s address is on a perforated section that can be removed to reveal the return address and there is an adhesive tape section so they can be resealed and mailed back.
WOW Lovefilm sends out between 500,000 and 600,000 envelopes each week, making it Royal Mail’s biggest customer. More than 150 people work in Lovefilm’s Peterborough packing and distribution centre. The envelopes can be co-branded and have included snack or toiletry samples along with third-party advertising inserts. Lovefilm brand manager Bekkie Sunley says: Sponsored envelopes are a great way of delivering our advertisers’ messages into the hands of eager customers. Inserts can be targeted to specific groups based on Lovefilm’s customer data.
