Johnston Press ceases publications of two Sussex titles

Regional publisher Johnston Press has ceased publication of two free titles in Sussex, the Eastbourne Advertiser and the Worthing Guardian.

According to Johnston Press the titles had become uneconomical to run and were dropped as part of an ongoing review of its publishing strategy.

The company’s flagship titles in each area, the Eastbourne Herald and the Eastbourne Gazette, and the Worthing Herald and the Worthing Advertiser – will continue to be produced.

Employees from these four titles also produced the discontinued freesheets, which were only available as pick up titles with no home delivery, and therefore no jobs will be lost.

Sussex Newspapers managing director Karl Dimmock said the two publications had been "mothballed".

"These titles have become uneconomical to publish at the moment and the situation has been exacerbated by the significant increase in newsprint costs," He said. "Should the economic climate and other factors change then we will review this position."
