Star product: Springwood Enterprise Business Model

Springwoods Enterprise Business Model (EBM) is a business model in a box, and that box also contains the techniques, tools and tips to help printers successfully implement the model.

This software was developed by Springwood’s founder Gordon Wood and his business partner as an attempt to condense more than 20 years of expertise – as a manager and latterly as a consultant – in the industry into a tool to implement continuous business improvements.

Wood took up the challenge, laid-down in December’s issue of Printing World, to deliver a product that offered a rapid ROI and introduced EBM.

The software works in a number of ways: the Symptom Sorter can be used to start addressing areas where a problem has already been identified in a business and EBM can be used to start improving the most troublesome areas. Another option is to follow the separate modules that cover all aspects of
running a print business. At the heart of the EBM is the EFQM Business Excellence Model, a management framework designed to enable companies establish what are the most pressing issues in their business and the steps needed to improve things.

Continuous improvement across all business areas is another of the EBM’s functions. By following the process it is designed to deliver baby-step 1% incremental improvements in each field. The idea being that the cumulative effect of many small improvements is a big overall improvement in profitability and success.

Many of Springwood’s UK clients regularly pick up awards for their performance and Océ has picked up the software and now offers it to its customers worldwide.

A single seat licence for the software costs £1,500. Additional seat licences and training in the use of the software are also available to ensure firms make the most of it.
