Ricoh 2105

Jan Wilks at the reprographics department of Harper Adams University College was drawn to the Ricohs extra comb binding and bookletmaking functions

What is it?
It’s a digital printer with an automated 21-hole punch to handle comb binding applications.

Did you look at any other similar machines?
Yes, I considered a number of machines.

Why did you choose to buy a new press?
Our priority was to increase productivity and turn jobs around much faster. We had no automated solution for bookletmaking and comb binding, therefore automating many of the manual tasks that were slowing us down became a priority if we were to increase productivity and provide a better service. In addition to purchasing the 2105, we also opted for a Ricoh 2090 with a built-in automated saddlestitching bookletmaker.

Why did you choose the 2105?
We were very impressed by what we saw and it didn’t take long for us to realise that both machines would be perfect. As soon as we were ready to place an order, Danwood responded immediately and installed both machines very promptly.

What features do you particularly like?
The punch for comb binding, the bookletmaking facility [on the 2090], the fact that it can do page numbering and you’re also able to insert other coloured pages.

Is there anything that you dislike?
Nothing really.

Is there anything that you wish it had that it doesn’t?
It doesn’t have a standalone stapler and we do miss this function.

How fast is it?
Very little difference to my previous machines, but the additional functions help to increase the turnaround time of work

How reliable is it?
We’ve experienced very little downtime.

What’s the quality like?
Excellent.

How easy is it to use?
Very easy.

Would you say that it has saved you time?
Yes, with the increased functionality of the Ricoh production engines our two- to three-day lead times have been slashed to the point where we are able to turnaround 85% of work on the same day.

How about money?
I am well within my budget.

Has it won you any new work?
No new work, but staff expectations are higher.

Would you say that it offers value for money?
Very much so.

Were there any difficulties experienced during the installation or after?
The change over went smoothly. They were installed in just one day with little interruption to our production schedule.

What about the pre- and after-sale service?
I cannot find fault with the service. In particular, the engineers are friendly and knowledgeable about the machines they service.

Under what circumstances would you buy another?
We have already installed a number of machines in the library.
