Charles Turner, technical analyst at E.ON, has saved money and made customer communications more engaging with this software, finds Philip Chadwick

Describe your business
E.ON is one of the UK’s leading power and gas companies  generating and distributing electricity, and retailing power and gas.

What does the software do?
The HP Exstream software allows us to develop new customer communications and make changes to our existing documents. We currently use the software for a wide variety of documents, such as our bills and statements, and other customer communications, such as our welcome letters and contracts. We print in both colour and mono.

Why did you choose this particular product?
The software’s flexible platform was a big draw, with both online and physical delivery capabilities. It enables an integrated solution to our document handling process.

Did you look at any other similar products?
No. We found that this software met our needs.

Why did you make the purchase?

HP Exstream software provides us with the ability to make changes to our portfolio without compromising on quality. This enables our business to react to a changing market with the confidence that our customers will not be adversely impacted by change.

What features do you particularly like?
We enter and supply data from several different systems in varying formats. The Dialogue application can handle multiple data platforms and transform that data into a standardised format.

Is there anything that you dislike?
It’s a very specialist application, which means that our staff need to be very skilled as well.

Is there anything that you wish it had that it doesn’t?
At the moment, it suits our requirements as a business.

How reliable is it?
Very reliable.

What’s the quality like?
The quality of the communication is very good and it is exceptional at handling imagery.

How easy is it to use?
It’s a very specialist application so we have a large pool of people who are extremely skilled to call upon.

How much time or money has it saved?
Utilising HP Exstream software has enabled us to save around £500,000 in postal costs. Due to the flexibility of the product, we have been able to remove a number of leaflets from our communications. The software has also allowed us to stream our communications more effectively and apply mailsortation discounts to our mailings.

Would you say that it offers value for money?
Yes. It gives us the flexibility we need for the different types of documents, while maintaining the level of quality we expect.

Were there any difficulties experienced during the installation or after?
As with any new software, during installation we experienced minor problems, but we overcame these easily.

What about the pre- and after-sale service?
Pre-sales is very good and we have found that the after-sales service has improved over the number of years we’ve worked with HP.

Who do you think the software is right for?
Given the competitiveness of the utility market in the
UK, the software allows us to improve our speed to market and cut down the time it takes to get messages out to our customers. So any business with these requirements.

Supplier’s response
Simon Reynolds, HP group manager for IPG Enterprise Software, UK and Ireland, says: HP Exstream is an advanced enterprise document automation solution. It is used widely across the world by companies and organisations from the utility, financial services, public sector, insurance and telecommunication industries. Using HP Exstream, E.ON was able to create its OneBill programme and redesign the fulfilment it sends to new customers. This clear communication helps manage customer expectations and, as a result, customers are asking fewer questions, calling E.ON’s contact centre less as they understand more. This results in saved money and reduced call times for E.ON and its customers.
