Its new ImagePerfect SafeTouch laminate will become commercially available next month.

The 80mic clear film uses zinc pyrithione as the antimicrobial agent. This is encapsulated in the film to provide protection over an extended period.

Spandex said that it would offer “over 99.99% proven protection” against a range of common bacteria, fungi and parasites.

Stefano Nigrone, director of ImagePerfect at the Bristol firm, said the product would help companies and organisations “safeguard their staff and customers” by adding bacterial protection to a variety of surfaces “at a time when public sensitivity around hygiene has never been higher”.

“ImagePerfect SafeTouch gives customers an important new choice – the maximum level of anti-microbial protection, guaranteed for three years, with the application flexibility of a PVC material and a solvent-based adhesive, at a competitive price point,” he stated.

The laminate is designed for interior use on flat surfaces. Spandex said it was suitable for direct application to surfaces, with the aesthetic of the surface retained due to its transparency. The film is available in matt and gloss finishes.

Target markets include retail, public transport, healthcare and education.

It is also suitable for over-lamination of printed materials, once the ink has dried for 48 hours.

Spandex said the material has been independently tested by 3A Laboratori.

The Covid-19 pandemic has resulted in growing demand for protective materials and coatings. Anti-viral substances are also under development by coatings experts.
