New year predictions: Richard Gray, Prinovis UK

Prinovis managing director Richard Gray believes the upcoming General Election represents both an opportunity and a threat for the printing industry.

What’s at the top of your Christmas wish list this year?

England to win the Rugby World Cup.

What trend (business or technology) do you think 2014 will be remembered for?

Retailers re-learning the value of the printed product.

What do you think will represent the single biggest opportunity for printers in 2015 and why?

The General Election.

What do you think will represent the single biggest threat for printers in 2015 and why?

The General Election. There are some really scary possible outcomes ranging from the tax, pay and spending policies promised by the Labour Party to the prospect of an exit from the EU, which could be the result of an in/out referendum promised by the Conservatives. On top of all of this the disruptive effect of UKIP and a resurgent SNP presence in Westminster could lead to a minority or further coalition government. Post-May 2015, we could have some politically and economically turbulent months!

What’s the one thing that the industry should do more of, or do better, in 2015?

Selling the value of the printed product over and above digital media.

What was your biggest disappointment in 2014?

As an Englishman working in a German-owned company, England failing to win a game in the football World Cup, this was further aggravated by Germany winning it… again!

What was your highlight of 2014?

Prinovis UK winning the ERA award for production of the Sunday Times Colour Magazine and a highly commended for Asda Magazine.

What are your hopes for 2015?

To continue Prinovis UK’s sales success in attracting more customers to print at our state-of-the-art facility in Liverpool.

What was the most important thing that you learnt in 2014?

That the printed product has a long-term future and that there are real reasons to be optimistic about the coming years; providing we continue to listen to our customers and provide a service that gives them a return on investment.

What’s your favourite Christmas cracker joke?

A duck goes into a pub and orders a pint of cherry brandy, the bar man asks the duck how he’s going to pay as he doesn’t have a wallet. The duck says 'it’s fine, put it on the bill'.

Are you making any new year’s resolutions? If so, what?

No.

Who will win the Rugby World Cup in 2015?

My heart says England but my head says the All Blacks.
