Xaar records revenue rise for past six months

Cambridge-based inkjet technology specialist Xaar has revealed trading for the first half of the year was "in line" with board expectations, with revenue up on the previous six months.

The company recorded revenue of £20.9m for the six months to 30 June 2009, an increase from £19.5m six months earlier. Year-on-year results were down £1.6m from £22.5m.

Xaar's adjusted profit before tax for the period came in at £1.3m, which was down from £4m the year previous, but up from a £200,000 loss in the six months to 31 December 2008.

The printhead manufacturer's net cash for the period was approximately £10.3m.

During the six-month period, Xaar introduced two new printheads, the Electron and Proton, designed for wide- and grand-format printers.

The additions to the manufacturer's Platform 1 raised its printhead model roster to eight.

According to the company, while trading in the US improved on last year's figures, sales in Europe continued to decline, with product launches converting to sales slower than anticipated.

The manufacturer also reported that sales to Asia have made a "reasonable recovery" from late 2008 when sales of its Platform 1 products declined.

It added that the previously announced relocation of its Swedish manufacturing plant to the UK, creating 100 jobs, was on track.

In a statement, the board said it was "encouraged by trading volumes in the period", but added it was cautious thanks to the continuing lack of visibility and uncertainty in the economic environment.

Xaar's performance figures arrive before its interim results are announced on 19 August.
