Wintry prints, pretty as a picture

Colours were reproduced exactly, said Ward Tonkinson

Artist Nicola Ward Tonkinson’s LS Lowry-inspired Christmas paintings are a joy to behold.

As simply drawn as their inspiration, each picture keeps the crisp, naive charm of Lowry’s style – but with Ward Tonkinson’s own festive nod. And what better way to spread Christmas cheer than to send the pictures on to friends and family?

What was produced?

Ward Tonkinson approached local Bristol printer, Redcliffe Imaging, for a run of 150 greetings cards, with 50 cards each from three separate files. Each finished card measures 150x150mm, printed on 300gsm Invercote Creato from Antalis.

What did the job entail?

With print-ready files uploaded directly to Redcliffe Imaging’s online service, the job was simple. The team ran the three files through its Konica Minolta AccurioPress C7090 toner press, before trimming and creasing the cards on its Duplo DC-646 cutter-creaser.

Thomas Chard, managing director of the employee-owned print firm, said the C7090 was well suited to the task.

“We find it a reliable and robust piece of kit that allows us to meet our clients’ requirements,” he said.

“It makes quality products with the highest print quality, at a fast pace.”

What challenges were overcome?

As jobs go, the cards were relatively simple to print, coming straight through from the 11-strong team’s web-to-print portal ready to queue.

“The real challenge is trying to predict when we’re busy,” Chard said, explaining that the pre-Christmas rush has been particularly full this year.

“We are invariably busy, but it’s not set in stone. That’s definitely the challenge, especially in today’s industry.”

What was the feedback?

Ward Tonkinson was thrilled with the results, with her cards now finding homes across the country.

“As I’m producing cards not only for my own website, but also for art galleries and museum gift shops, they have to be of the highest quality,” she said.

“Redcliffe produces sharp images with no loss of quality, and they’re able to reproduce the colours of my paintings exactly. They provide that professional finish I require, using vegan-safe, biodegradable materials. So for me, and my environmentally conscious customers, they tick every box.”
