Wingate Signs doubles output and floor space following Roland install

Manchester-based wide-format print business Wingate Signs has nearly doubled production and intends to bring finishing in-house following the installation of a Roland VersaUV hybrid LEJ 640 printer.

The family-run business made the £42,000 investment five months ago backed by asset finance firm Academy Leasing and has since taken on around five new clients as well as substantial new work from existing customers.

The company primarily produces event branding and signage for clients including Betfair and Coral at UK racecourses, and has recently taken on work for the Jockey Club as a result of the investment.

Managing director Dawn Saunders said the Roland had made the firm more competitive as it was able to turn work around more quickly, printing directly onto Corex rigid board without the need to overlay with vinyl.

She said it also meant they could now easily print the blankets that are placed on the winning horses.

“We can do all the printing in-house now without having to outsource, but the next step is just to get finishing in-house. Currently we use a wall saw as well as outsourcing the cutting, but we are looking at getting a flatbed cutter that can cope with the large boards we deal with. It makes sense to do that and it will make us a real one-stop shop.”

To make way for the additional work as well as the impending finishing equipment investment, the company is also in the process of doubling floor space at the firm’s Prestwich facility to around 160sqm.

Saunders said that she also intended to grow the company, which was started in 1992 by her parents, from seven staff to around 10 within a year. “I think we are going from strength to strength and we’re really excited about the business moving forward,” she said.
