Wernham eyes Green Mark with PlateRite buy

Wernham Printers has moved to improve the green credentials of its platemaking operation after investing in a Screen PlateRite 4300E system.

The Enfield-based company has responded to increased demand for greener printing from a client base that includes local authorities, unions and charities.

Its Screen platesetter images Agfa Azureus plates and replaces a film machine, which the printer claims has boosted platemaking productivity by around 30%.

The B3 general commercial printer has also wielded the environmentally friendly credentials of the PlateRite to work towards the Green Mark standard for smaller businesses.

Managing director Paul Quirke said: "We have been looking at a range of ways to increase productivity and the platemaking department was one area where we knew we could make big improvements in terms of costs and production times."

The new platesetter is imaging plates for the £500,000-turnover company's pair of two-colour Heidelberg GTO presses.

Quirke added that by moving from conventional film, the six-staff printer has drastically reduced the amount of waste it creates.

"We already use FSC, recycled papers and vegetable ink but wanted to do more so we have been working towards the Green Mark standard created for smaller operations," he said.
