UPM buys land at Shotton mill

UPMs Shotton Paper mill has purchased 62 acres of land adjacent to its site in a 1.4m deal.

The land, acquired from the Welsh Development Agency, could be used for further expansion at the Deeside plant.

A UPM spokeswoman said it made sense to purchase the land. Although she said there were no immediate plans for expansion at the site, the land could be used for development if and when opportunities arose, she added.

UPM's Shotton mill has a capacity to produce 470,000 tonnes of newsprint each year. It is one of the largest manufacturers of newsprint in the UK.

The Waste Resources Action Programme awarded the mill a grant of 17m to turn the site into a 100% recycled fibre plant (PrintWeek, 31 July 2003).
