University set to trade print

A university print department has started to take in a significant amount of commercial trade work after investing 500,000 in press and finishing equipment.

The University of Leicester decided to re-invest in its inplant, AVS Print, and move to a new plant after it brought in a management consultant to review its operations.

"There could have been various outcomes," said AVS Print manager Ian Hickman. "But the consultant learned that we were delivering a first-class, cost-efficient service at a more competitive price than if the work was outsourced."

AVS Print has now installed a B2 Shinohara 75IIP two-colour press, a Horizon BQ 270 perfect binder, a 20 station VAC-Turbo collating system and an automated B2 folding machine.

Hickman said AVS now has a turnover of around 1.4m.
