Ipswich-based Ashe Converting installed a 17-line Opal slitter rewinder, fitted with Hertfordshire-based Lake Image Systems's (LIS) IntegraVision camera, at South African fruit and vegetable label supplier Smart Farming.
Many farmers in a product's country of origin already supply pre-labelled produce for supermarkets such as Tesco, helping to increase delivery speeds and cut costs.
However, Tesco has recently stepped up its labelling requirements, specifying GS1 DataBar symbols on its self-adhesive packaging, meaning label verification by the farmers and South African suppliers is much more crucial than before.
Amos Krisi, chief executive of Smart Farming, said: "There is a strong emphasis on inspection for this contract and Lake and Ashe have worked hard to integrate the camera systems to ensure perfect synchronicity."
GS1 DataBar symbols include GS1 Application Identifiers such as serial numbers, lot numbers and expiration dates, helping to boost product authentication and traceability for fresh food products.
