Martin, who was recognised for his contribution to the trade union at this year's annual conference, was seconded to the CWU in the early 1990s from his post as print manager with Centurion Press.
He left Centurion in 2007 to form TU Ink, which has continued to provide print management services to the CWU, and assisted the CWU communications team on every campaign for the 26 years running up to his semi-retirement in 2010.
A special dispensation was unanimously agreed by the union's National Executive Committee, in recognition of the service that Martin had given, allowing him to receive the award.
CWU president Davie Bowman presented the medal in front of 800 delegates and guests. "Over the years we as officers of the union took all the credit for campaigns won, but behind the scenes Alf was the one who ensured we got our message across to the general public or our members."
Martin added: "At TU Ink we pride ourselves on our commitment to customer service. We believe in working in partnership with our clients to deliver integrated services. I consider myself remarkably lucky to have had this unique opportunity to work with inspirational people at the CWU on their ground-breaking campaigns, delivering real change for common good."
