Trinity poised to pick up further contract work after Sunday Sport deal

Newspaper manufacturer Trinity Mirror has said that its growing contract work now makes up a "significant proportion" of the company's revenue, according to director of manufacturing Rupert Middleton.

Speaking after it announced its second quarter results for 2011, Middleton told PrintWeek that, after winning the contract to print the newly launched Sunday Sport, "We want to attract more publishing partners, since we believe that together we are stronger and can maximise synergies to the benefit of all, in printing, in distribution, in pre-press and IT. The synergies are in cost saving, improved service and generating new sales.

"Almost all peak night time slots at all our plants are full seven nights a week. However, by using our network of eight print sites, we can sometimes reschedule work across the network to open up slots to meet specific customer requirements.

He added that the company also had press and finishing capacity on some days.

Middleton said he also believes that more publishers will look to drop printing, leading to an increase in the widespread consolidation that has seen a number of newspaper print facilities close in recent years.

But Trinity is also looking away from publishers for future revenue. He added: "Beyond publishers, we are growing our business serving major retailers, helping them through print and various distribution options to target customers with fast-turnaround supplements."
