Thomson Litho managing director of manufacturing John Williamson (pictured left) said the firm opted for the Muller Martini because of its high levels of automation and flexibility. "We are investing in the best binder on the market and choosing the highest specification so we are confident that we will see a good return on it," he said.
The purchase is part of an ongoing investment of 10m at the firm. The Bolero replaced a Muller Martini Starbinder, and began production at the firm's 30,000sqm factory in East Kilbride last week.
The 21 feeder Bolero was specified with a 3695 gatherer, a Universo book block feeder, a Bolero splitting saw, two Zenith trimmers, two CB 16 stackers and PUR glue nozzles.
The new machine is running alongside five other Muller Martinis already at the plant: three Prima stitchers and two older Muller Martini binders.
The 39-year-old firm, which employs 400 staff, is still owned by the Thomson family.
