Textbooks won't be back says Schwarzenegger

Arnold Schwarzenegger has called an end to "antiquated and heavy" printed textbooks as part of plans to introduce extended online learning to Californian schools.

The governor of the State of California is looking to cut millions of dollars in annual state spending on education and believes online technology is the best way to achieve that.

The former actor, famous for his roles in the Terminator and Predator films, said that from August this year, maths and science students will be able to access online learning resources.

Schwarzenegger said: "The textbooks are outdated as far as I'm concerned."

The State of California spent $350m (£217m) on textbooks in 2008, something the governor says he can no longer afford with the state's budget cap standing at $24.3bn.
