Tesco title dispute spells end for Fox

Fox Publishing has gone into administration with the loss of 26 jobs, over an alleged disagreement with Tesco over distribution of Healthy Living magazine

Richmond-based Fox took over the ownership of Healthy Living, previously Tesco Healthy Living, after Tesco decided to axe its other titles Tesco Clubcard, Tesco Recipe and Tesco Vegetarian, in September last year.

These were replaced by a single title, Tesco Magazine, earlier this year (PrintWeek, 8 April). Fox publisher Gregor Rankin said the publishing house had taken over the title in lieu of notice following the supermarket's decision to chop its multiple titles.

However, after the first issue was published in January this year, complaints were received that copies could not be found in stores, and according to Rankin some 26,000 copies were returned to the publishing house.

Healthy Living was printed by Wyndeham Heron and repro was handled by Screaming Colour.

A spokesman for Screaming Colour said although it was owed monies, it was not a damaging amount.

Tesco has counter-claimed that Fox owed the supermarket chain a substantial six-figure sum for a percentage of advertising income from Tesco Healthy Living.

In a statement Tesco said that it was disappointed Fox had gone into administration, but that it was not to blame.

"We worked hard with Fox to find a way in which their new magazine could flourish as an independent title," a spokesman said.

The chain said it had decided not to stock the title after Fox had reneged on an agreement to "repay what it owed".

Wyndeham Heron was unavailable for comment.
