Swizzels is one of the oldest sweet brands in the world and has been making sweets since 1928.
Its existing range of collections of family favourite sweets includes plastic containers and bucket-style tubs, as well as pouches and gift boxes.
Leyland-based Affinity Packaging has worked with Swizzels since 2007, and has developed a strong partnership with the confectioner over the years.
The paperboard box for Sweet Shop Favourites is litho printed using food-safe inks, explained Affinity sales consultant Ed Mould.
“It has a perforated opening and tab closure. The trial run has been printed on folding box board, but the material can be varied depending on requirements.
“And we can make quick design changes, for example for seasonal promotions,” he added.
Jonathan Dee, purchasing director and sustainability lead at Swizzels, commented: “We’ve worked with Affinity for a long time, and that mutual loyalty has built a strong understanding of both our needs and the evolving sugar confectionery market.”
Dee said he was excited when Affinity approached him with the box idea, which is currently being trialled via one of Swizzels’ customers.
“I believe it’s going to be very well-received. That said, it’s important to note that we don’t see this as a replacement for our beloved tubs, which are both recyclable and reusable. Instead, this is a new option in addition to meet some of our consumers’ changing preferences.”
Affinity Packaging was acquired by industry investor Peter Andreou 14 months ago.
The firm’s offering is comprehensive and spans digital and litho printing including B2, B1 and size 6 format presses, as well as cutting and creasing, finishing and gluing, and forming for products such as branded paper cups and trays.
The Swizzels paperboard box is recyclable via standard kerbside collections.
Its sweets range includes Love Hearts, Parma Violets, Refreshers, Fizzers and Drumsticks. The firm has a number of collaborations and brand extensions including licensed gifts and a Love Hearts card range via Moonpig.
